TWC Walk 36; The Crinkle Crags; 13th April 2013

For Walk 36 we decided to stay at the Three Shires Inn at Little Langdale, this was a new hotel for the group.
The rooms were nice and the beer was good, the food was a little bit of a let down, the portions were small and the prices around the £15.00 – £16.00 mark for a main.
Again after a few ales it was time for bed, the morning came around ever so quickly and the it was time for breakfast, which was ok, nothing remarkable.
After Breakfast, we headed up to the Three shires stone on Wrynose pass and met up with the rest of the party.

At the start of the walk we were in thick cloud, but as we gained height the cloud cleared and the views were fantastic.
We reached Crinkle crags without a problem the only slight awkwardness was around the Big Step on Crag 2.
We reached Crag 5 and then retraced our steps to Crag 1, after descending crag 1 the rain came in and was with us until the end of the walk.

For dinner that evening we decided to try the Britannia Inn at Elterwater, food and ale was fantastic and one for a future walk.

Another Great New walk with great company and many happy memories.

TWC Walk 35; Windermere and Staveley, 15th Dec 2012

Dear All

The weekend started with drinks and pork scratchings (Mr Barnes) at the Eagle and Child in Staveley, we then headed back to the watermill to meet the late arrivals, after a few drinks/banter and dinner it was time for bed.

The morning came very soon and we tucked into a hearty breakfast before we prepared ourselves for the walk in hand.
Walk 35 took place on the 15th December 2012 with 8 in the party, we had 3 drop outs at the last minute which was a shame, but we understand people have other priorities and last minute things do come up.

The first leg of the walk took us from the WaterMill at Ings via Yews to School Knott, the weather was very cold with rain for most of the ascent.
We then headed in a northernly direction via black moss to the small hamlet of Heaning, before we started a secondary ascent to grassgarth. We them took a North easterly path  skirting the edge of Williamsons monument on Hugill Fell. By this time we were on our descent and on reaching Ullthwaite bridge, 2 of the party decided to take the quick off to Staveley. The rest of the party headed for staveley head fell and then back down to staveley village.

The walk ended at the outstanding Hawkshead Brewery, after a few pints we headed back to the watermill for a shower and change.

After the usually evening of festivities and brandy, wine and port, it was time for bed (again).

The morning of the 16th came around with a big breakfast and then goodbyes to walkers old and new.

Another fantastic weekend, with good company and good food and ale, what more to you want? well the weather could have been better!

Until next time, have a merry christmas and a happy new year

TWC Walk 34; Wasdale to Eskdale via Mickledore and Harknott

Dear All
The 28th July saw the arrival of TWC 34, the weather on the walk was probably the worst we had seen since 2007.
The ascent was pretty good its just a long drag up brown tongue, but we had a good crack on the way, then the rain kicked in.

We  kept getting followed by 3 peakers, people attempting the 3 peaks challenge
Please see my note to the Wasdale mountain rescue team inserted below.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________

The TWC (Trial Walking Club) walked on Saturday 28th July from Wasdale to Hardknott via Mickledore.
We encountered no less than 7 parties without map/compass or any clue enroute to the pike, and all were following us.
We corrected 4 parties parties at the hollowstones/mickledore junction, and sent them via hollow stones, and 3 caught us at the more at the large boulder at the start of lords rake (we were deciding on the west wall or not, with the weather we called no joy). We corrected 2 more and one followed us up mickledore and we pointed him towards the pike.

Thankfully no one followed us to Hardknott
Best Wishes

TWC Walk 33; Wasdale to Ravenglass via Ill Gill Head and Whin Rigg

Dear All
On the 9th March a small team of around 6-7 embarked on the Wasdale to Ravenglass route via the screes.
The Weather was pretty terrible so we dont have many pictures of this one but all are contained in the attached pdf, please click here for the walk report.

After the ascent and descent of the screes we were joined by our good friend Tim Cooper for the final part of the walk from Irton Fell to Ravenglass, still a good five miles or so.
Arriving at the Holly House for the End Ex and a few beers we met our other good friend Johan Meintjes, who had arrived late and had gone the completely wrong way, but it was good to see him safe and well.

Looking forward to the next one TWC 34, scheduled for the 28th July

TWC Walk 31; Wasdale to Eskdale via the West Wall

Dear All
The next walk is now 2 weeks away!

We have a party of 14 walkers; the walk will take us from Wasdale Head through the valley of Wasdale via Scafell’s West Wall (Good Weather) or over the Wastwater Screes (Bad Weather, low cloud) to Eskdale.

Depending on the good/bad route we will then head for Eskdale Dalegarth and catch the narrow gauge train to Ravenglass were we endex.
rail details at http://www.ravenglass-railway.co.uk/

We are aiming for a 9:30am start and expect to get to Eskdale between 3 and 4 for the 45 min train journey, we have a mini bus booked from ravenglass at 6pm to take us back to wasdale, this will give us ample time for a couple of beers in the ratty arms or the holly house.

The train costs £7 pp and the taxi around £5pp, so please remember to bring along some money on the walk, oh and don’t forget the beer tokens

Look forward to seeing you then.
Cheers
Jon
